See the World for Free

The idea here is to TRAVEL THE WORLD regardless of time or budget. It dawned on me one day that even if I had unlimited time and money (which I definitley do not), I still couldn't see everything in the world that I'd like to see--I'm simply not going to live long enough to do it.

But I had a bit of brain wave and soon after the travel envelope was born. This is an actual physical envelope. I typed the name of every country in the world, plus every state in the US on little slips of paper which I then put into the envelope. In the beginning we (myself, my husband, Dave and daugher Catherine) would draw out a slip at random at the beginning of the month and that's where we would go---at least in our minds. We grab some books about the country from the library and put them in our bathroom to look at. We also check out some videos about the country if any. We check it out on googleearth, listen to the music, try the food, maybe even attempt to learn a dance or celebrate a festival.

After the first two years we discovered that even virtual traveling can be tiring, so we travel now whenever I happen to be in the mood.

It's great fun. I especially love it when people I meet have been to the place I'm "visiting" in real life, or get excited and have some virtual adventures of their own. I hope that anyone who comes across this blog will feel welcome to come with us on the trip!

You have a standing reservation to see it all!

the Night Market

May 6, 2016

Hopped on a plane to Phuket. All airlines should be this cheerful.

Dave certainly looks relaxed.

What a view!!

Nice Hotel!

Unfortunately, these lovely pool sheep belonged to the hotel so Dave couldn't bring them home.

In my opinion, this is the way to do a work trip. First stop by a tailor and get some tailored shirts. Then head for the beach. Thailand is very hot this time of year.

They drove around and passed a big sign that said, "Everything! We just everything!"

our driver drove us around & picked up many people. At one point he gave us stickers. He stopped and told us all #4 people get out. That is all he said the entire trip. Now we wait.

They went to a monkey show. Sounds kind of low-rent. This little kid was delighted with the monkey. The teenager later on, not so much.

Lastly, the stopped an saw a large Buddha. I think he looks serene.

Started the day with some laundry

Some Elephant riding in the middle.

And ended the day with a beautiful dinner. The macaroon topped with lamb is a little weird, but otherwise looks fantastic.

In an Agatha Christie story, the pick would have been a murder weapon for sure.

Then, off to bed accompanied by the Gekko under the bed and the cockroach in the bathroom.

Here's the backdoor view of the resort

They took a shuttle to the boat. The next group to be picked up didn't show---unhappy shuttle driver, but he got them there. Looks to be a nice boat.

An then, the beach! Only an hour--but some hours are VERY good.

Next stop, Phi phi island. Dave doesn't know why, but they got 1 hour here too.

May 9, 2016 maybe  days are all confused with the time lapse.

I believe they spent most of this day doing inservice for teachers.

I think this is one of the best sunset pictures I've ever seen. Great job, Dave!

And another just to round things out.

Up at 4:30 a.m. to go to the airport to catch the veeeeeeery long flight home.
Back in the USA, the land of interesting airport art. (San Francisco airport)

This sculpture, which looks Thai to me, is very American, made of cereal boxes.
