See the World for Free

The idea here is to TRAVEL THE WORLD regardless of time or budget. It dawned on me one day that even if I had unlimited time and money (which I definitley do not), I still couldn't see everything in the world that I'd like to see--I'm simply not going to live long enough to do it.

But I had a bit of brain wave and soon after the travel envelope was born. This is an actual physical envelope. I typed the name of every country in the world, plus every state in the US on little slips of paper which I then put into the envelope. In the beginning we (myself, my husband, Dave and daugher Catherine) would draw out a slip at random at the beginning of the month and that's where we would go---at least in our minds. We grab some books about the country from the library and put them in our bathroom to look at. We also check out some videos about the country if any. We check it out on googleearth, listen to the music, try the food, maybe even attempt to learn a dance or celebrate a festival.

After the first two years we discovered that even virtual traveling can be tiring, so we travel now whenever I happen to be in the mood.

It's great fun. I especially love it when people I meet have been to the place I'm "visiting" in real life, or get excited and have some virtual adventures of their own. I hope that anyone who comes across this blog will feel welcome to come with us on the trip!

You have a standing reservation to see it all!

Batu Caves

Outside of Kuala Lumpur are the Batu Caves. These look incredible. It's a vast cave system that someone in the 1800's thought looked religious and so he put a Hindu statue in the cave and people have been putting up statues ever since.

These caves are exactly what I feel like touring today. I have a bit of a cold, and so something touristy sounds just right. I can almost see the street vendors and the food stalls that must be here. What an exotic place. It would be fun to learn a little about Hinduism too.

Rafflesia

This guy is just someone off of Google images, but I wanted to put his picture here to give an idea of just how huge this flower is.

The funny thing is that just before we went to virtual Malaysia, I saw a show starring the rafflesia plant. Not a documentary, Drop Dead Diva was the show of all things. In this episode, Jane, the lawyer is asked to represent a woman who claims to have a loving relationship with her beautiful Rafflesia flower. The big, bad museum wants to take it away from her. Lots of funny twists, it really is a cute show. I love how random stuff like this turns up in life.

Durian Fruit

Maylasia begins with a quest! The quest is to try Durian fruit--the world's smelliest fruit, to the point that Maylasian hotels won't even allow it through the doors. Apparently orangutans love them--people either love them or hate them. Catherine got to try one in her biology class where one fruit easily fed the entire class of 300. Catherine would be in the "hate it" group, but I am determined.
